AFROPUNK BROOKLYN FESTIVAL 2019

So here we go my photos from AfroPunk Brooklyn are finished. Between work and sleep it took me almost 4 days to sift through and edit over 500 pics, but I'm am finished. 🙌🏾 Not even gonna front I had the most fun this year than last two AfroPunk events! Plus my portrait photography has improved dramatically. There was a little run in with AfroPunk’s security detail that I still considering if j want to address or not. I may go live and let y'all know exactly what happened.

I think the next big event coming up is the Labor Day Parade so stay tuned for that. I think I might have to start hitting the local art scene again.

#RickyRenuncia, Puerto Rican community calls for resignation of Ricardo Roselló in NYC

As private messages leaked from the telegram account of Ricardo Roselló, protest emerged all of the United States in solidarity with the island of Puerto Rico. Roselló’s private messages being exposed would be a nightmare for any politician but accompanied with ongoing attempts to recover from disasters and a financial crisis, it would prove too much for even the most seasoned elected official. All of this has Puerto Ricans across the U.S. calling for the Governor to resign.

These protesters gathered from all over the city to voice frustration not only with Ricardo Roselló but with the United States government as a whole. Many considered the control the U.S. Has over Puerto Rico to be no different than the colonial relationship America had with Britain.

JASMINE NICHOLE x ISSA KHARI

So after sitting on these photos for almost a year I've finally completed the photoset. My subject for this shoot is the Uber talented Jasmine Nichole I've known her for about 3 or 4 years now and somehow we have never managed to shoot together. So last year while she was in town for AfroPunk we finally teamed up.

Part of the reason I took so long to edit this set of photos was I knew right out the camera these were my best work to date and that still stands true a year later. Y'all know I don't shoot portraits very often and I fell in love mainly trying to figure out what I was going to do with color grading. Lol. So I had literally come up with at least 4-5 variations of color grading before finalizing this look. This process also birthed 2 originals presets which is something I want to really get into as well. (Soon come, Issa Khari Photography will be selling presets 👀)

The second reason I took so long to edit these photos was that I been in a creative funk most of the winter and spring. But like the saying goes great things come to those who wait. I am extremely proud of these and they were immediately added into my portfolio! Shout out to Jasmine Nichole you can check out her work here!

Alright y'all being that I'm out of this funk let me get back to editing… Stay tuned!

Spike Lee throws Brooklyn Block Party celebrating 30th anniversary of Iconic film ”Do The Right Thing”

Do The Right Thing Way, became official back in July of 2015 and is the official location for Spike Lee's annual Block Party! Spike makes it a point to return to the very location where he filmed the thought-provoking story some 30 years ago. DTRT like so many of Spike’s other films tells the story of the Brooklynites and the Greater Black Community.

Spike Brought out several guest throughout the 7-hour event including his castmates from the film Rosie Perez and Giancarlo Esposito , as well Les Twins, Public Enemy, and many others! I did spend much time at the gathering as I has to hit another event afterwards but I did manage to capture some really great photos! You can check out my full gallery below! My favorite shots have to be the dance battle that broke out during DJ Spinna’s set.

Untitled (Soho 2015)

This is a shot from when I first picked up photography. I used to run around the city or hours looking for anything interesting. I was mainly just trying to get as comfortable as possible with my camera so I would just snap away not really focusing too much on composition, I got lucky that day! (This photo is completely candid.) I believe the subject was trying to cross the street and I just happened to be in the right spot.
